Park City or Sundance Superspreader?

The first day in Park City was pretty overcast and snowy. Like, really snowy. I realized my waterproof booties I’d brought to Breckenridge weren’t going to be enough as I skidded carefully along the sidewalks. Regretting not bringing my snow boots, I headed to the Columbia outlet store to find what could meet my needs. Side note - I did see quite a few designer rain and snow boots around town and they were fabulous but I wasn’t about to spend the same amount (or more!!) that I spent on the AirBnB on footwear that I might only use a fraction of the year.

The second day, it was still overcast but clear. I also happened to get a terrible cold and cough. I’d brought a few rapid COVID tests with me and although I’d had it a little before the trip, I felt pretty disgusting on day two in Park City. I thankfully tested negative, but with my chest hurting from coughing so much, decided to take the day to rest and recharge.

Finally, on day 3 with single digit temps I got out on the slopes. There had been so much new snow and I made the most of wandering around on runs. Park City as a resort and mountain is enormous and it’s easy to get turned around or on trails where you’re not sure where they go. A little after lunch on ski day 1, I took a turn thinking I was heading down a blue run and by the time I realized it was definitely not, it was too late. I got stuck halfway down a black run that had all the things that are a little beyond my skill set: deep snow, trees close together, and moguls. I bumped around a bit and ended up scooting my way down to the bottom of the run. It takes a lot of focus, agility, and experience in that deep snow and as a casual skier, I was a novice at most of those things.

Wiggling down the deep snow wore me out and decided to shift to apres ski mode and tackle different areas the next day with more confidence, speed, and stuck to my blue groomers for the day. It was a great wrap up to Park City and had a blast. I think if I’d had a friend with me, I would have tried the deep snow again but skiing solo and with only single digits of folks going past me on that black run, I opted to stay for more populated groomers.
